What is Heritage Day?
For some, it is an opportunity to simply get together with family and friends for a braai
Heritage Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on September 24.
On this day, South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture, and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people.
But what does Heritage Day mean to you?
Not many people understand the real significance of or the meaning behind Heritage Day, which is celebrated annually on September 24.
For some, it is an opportunity to simply get together with family and friends for a braai, but does this take into account the multitude of cultures that make up our ‘rainbow nation’?
In the vein of celebrating shared culture rather than focusing on cultural divisions, a recent initiative by Braai for Heritage calls upon all South Africans to celebrate their common roots by having a braai (barbeque) today!
