Gandhi walkers arrive in Ladysmith
Together, they all walked from Naunton's to the SDS Temple in Forbes Street
The Gandhi Peace Walk from Gauteng to Durban made its way to Ladysmith yesterday (Saturday).
The walk from Johannesburg to Durban is being held by Rising Sun Community Newspapers (part of Caxton Community Newspapers), together with the Gandhi Development Trust.
The walkers started at the Rising Sun Lenasia office in Johannesburg on September 19 and will grandly conclude at the Mahatma Gandhi Informal Settlement in Inanda, Durban, on October 2, which also commemorates Gandhi’s remembrance birthday.
The walkers left Dundee yesterday morning, arriving in Ladysmith in the afternoon. At Naunton’s Guest House, on the outskirts of town (N11), they were joined by Ladysmith Gazette staff and SDS Temple members. Together, they all then walked from Naunton’s to the SDS Temple in Forbes Street.
The participants braved the fierce afternoon heat in remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Ladysmith Gazette provided the walkers with drinks, oranges and ice-cream along the way.
Public Safety helped with traffic control and made sure all the walkers were safe.
Today, the dynamic team (Ladysmith Gazette and SDS Temple members) walked the Gandhi peace walkers 5 kilometres out of town to the RTI offices. With smiles and shaking of hands, the walkers were bade farewell as they undertake the distance from Ladysmith to Estcourt today. Good luck to them!
