IFP’s Councillor Mbatha slams security at Councillors’ homes
Should ratepayers cough up to have bodyguards at the homes of Councillors?

Councillor Bongiwe Mbatha has slammed the decision to allow ANC Councillors Thoko Makaba and Lungile Mbhele to have security guards placed at their homes.
She wanted to know if the lives of these Councillors were in danger and if there was any Council decision to hire the guards. Endumeni Speaker, Siduduzo Mdluli, said the situation was that ‘both these Councillors are in danger as it should be remembered that the war room was burnt down twice in Sithembile and Councillor Mbhele was in danger’.
“There was also information that some residents have threatened to burn down Councillor Makaba’s home.”
He added that it was not ‘easy to call a special meeting to arrange for guards when the need for protection was urgent’.
“Councillor Mbatha should remember that she also asked for protection when she was Mayor.”
Mayor Mahaye suggested the debate be stopped ‘as there was no item that was submitted to deal with this matter. ‘
