Horses, cattle, goats and even donkeys are regularly spotted in the residential and business district.

This however, is an offence and livestock may be impounded and the owners charged. Although a stern warning was issued to livestock owners who allow their animals to roam free, this is a daily practice.

In July this year, Umtshezi’s Acting Municipal Manager Elphas Dladla said that owners may be charged a fine of R5 000 if found guilty of contravening the by-laws for the Keeping of Animals and impounding of animals (Pound by-laws), which specifically deal with animals found roaming on roads or public places.

Residents may call the emergency service on 036 352 6464/4444 to report wandering livestock.
