Nambiti Game Reserve welcomes new rhinos
The rhinos were brought in from Umfolozi Game Reserve and safely released in front of a large crowd of special guests
Nambiti Private Game Reserve has now been declared a nature reserve in terms of the Protected Areas Act.
The nature reserve also falls under the Andy Stewardship programme, which means privately-owned land has been declared as a nature reserve and gets the same protected status as national game reserves.
As part of the celebrations at the game reserve on Thursday, the government made four de-horned white rhinos available to Nambiti. The rhinos were brought in from Umfolozi Game Reserve and safely released in front of a large crowd of special guests. There is a custodian agreement for the three female rhinos and one male, de-horned white rhino so that Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife can share in the offspring of the rhinos.
It is the policy of Nambiti to de-horn all their rhinos so they can stay protected.
There were talks by honoured guests to help the community understand more about rhinos and the game reserve itself. Nambiti is a community-owned game reserve and a very successful one at that.
MEC for Finance Belinda Scott was in attendance, with other guests being the Land Claims Commissioner, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Head of Biodiversity and Ladysmith Mayor Vincent Madlala.
