Are posters on traffic lights a distraction?

An irate resident expressed his utter disgust at seeing posters being displayed at yet another intersection in the town.

According to the resident, these posters are distracting and pose a hazard to motorists.

“How do you concentrate on the road when these posters are in your face?” asked the resident.

Councillor Matthew Shunmugam, Chairperson of the Portfolio Standing Committee of Development Planning and Human Settlements, confirmed this form of advertising was prohibited.

“These posters are illegal. We have workers employed under the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) specifically to remove illegal posters,” he confirmed.

He advised residents to report illegal posters directly to him.

“I will escalate the matter to the Director of Town Planning, Ms N Khathide who will ensure the removal of the posters.”

By the time of publication, all the posters originally reported to the department were removed.
