Newcastle Municipality has made significant strides in the fight against HIV infection and the socio-economic impact of Aids.
This comes after the Special Programmes Unit of the municipality intensified to help people to change behaviour that rendered themselves vulnerable and susceptible to HIV infection.
In view of World Aids Day on December 1, approximately 100 Local Aids Council (LAC) members gathered at Newcastle Council Chamber to discuss ways to encourage healthy lifestyles on the day.
“We should be able to identify and assist needy individuals, especially those on medication and ensure they took their medication as prescribed. Newcastle Municipality does not want to help statistics, but people. We should be able to say these are the people we have assisted, not numbers,” emphasised, Mayor, Afzul Rehman.
Communities were also encouraged to make use of the gym facilities available at play parks around Newcastle to keep fit and healthy.
