Family has no water for 5 months
Neighbours have been generously supplying the family with water so that their basic needs are met
For the past five months, the Beukes family living at 37 First Street, Limit Hill, has been living without water.
They claim to have called uThukela on numerous occasions, but that no attempt has been made by the district municipality to come and fix the problem. Since moving into the house, they have had no water meter and the water line running from the house to where the meter should be is exposed above ground.
Their neighbours have been generously supplying the family with water for the past five months.
uThukela workers arrived on Friday to assess the situation. They said it appeared as if the meter had been stolen, and they had to go back to the office and redo the paperwork.
Cllr Abbas Warasally, who also went out to the scene, commented that, “I am very disappointed with the living conditions of this family and that no serious action has been taken to install a water meter. An email was sent to uThukela, stating what the problem was, and plumbers were sent out, so was the email misread or misunderstood?”
IFP member Peter Du Bruyn added that, “I am very disappointed in the fact that their (the family’s) right to have water has been taken so lightly and that the neighbours have had to assist them with such a basic constitutional right. I challenge the mayor to live without water for one month. Due to the fact that water is a basic necessity, we urge uThukela to resolve this matter with urgency or the Minister of Water Affairs has to be contacted.”
