Paradise motorists are faced with a dilemma when using Jenkyn and Sutherland streets.
Taxi drivers washing their vehicles on the vacant plot of land next to the taxi rank, are said to have a total disregard of road safety.
A resident has claimed that taxis occasionally park in the road, leaving no place for other vehicles to pass.
Allegedly, the drivers also enter the street without looking for oncoming traffic, compromising the safety of other motorists.
Protection Services Chief Traffic Officer, Ashok Anandhaw, said taxi operators were given permission to use the land as an interim measure for a holding yard.
“This is a temporary arrangement to curb the taxi violence. Only loading taxis should be in the rank. When there is crowding, too many vehicles are subject to damages and the additional vehicles create a refuge for criminals,” he said.
He explained that an arrangement was set in place to improve the area adjacent to the taxi rank, to accommodate the awaiting vehicles, which will soon be moved to the specified area.
“We are anticipating it will take two weeks, pending the paving of the proposed area.”
In the interim, Paradise motorists were encouraged to be patient.
“This is an ad hoc situation necessary as an immediate intervention. Hence, a recurrence is unlikely,” Officer Anandhaw concluded.
