Celebrating Newcastle’s history through sport

The concept of Newcastle playing host to a 58.2 kilometre marathon was discussed last Thursday during a meeting at the Amajuba District Municipality council chambers by Newcastle Sports Academy, in conjunction with the Amajuba District Municipality.
“We decided to take the initiative to start an Amajuba Marathon, but we wanted people with the same interests to join us, as nothing promotes social cohesion in the same way sports does,” emphasised Gigi Mazibuko, chairperson of Newcastle Sports Academy.
While the date has not yet been set, it was determined the marathon should be held on a day significant to the Newcastle community.
It was decided the marathon should start at the Amajuba Heritage site and end at Amajuba College, Madadeni.
“We had the Anglo-Boer War and it was at the Amajuba Mountain where it was ended. Through embracing our history, we can boost our tourism industry,” Mr Mazibuko said.
With this in mind, a possible date for the marathon would either be on the day when the Anglo-Boer War ended, May 31, or during September, which marked Heritage Month.
“We would really like sports clubs to become involved and creating a sense of passion for sports again,” he concluded.
