Construction to extend the taxi rank has officially begun.
Chief Traffic Officer Ashok Anandhaw said the work was necessary to curb taxi violence.
“Only loading taxis should be in the rank. When there is crowding, too many vehicles are subject to damages and the additional vehicles create a refuge for criminals,” he said.
Previously, taxi drivers who were not loading passengers washed their vehicles there, much to the annoyance of Paradise residents.
Taxi drivers were also accused of endangering motorists by entering the road without checking for oncoming traffic, or doing U-turns.
While the extension will ease traffic flow, no solutions have been brought to the table to solve alleged traffic infringements in the interim.
The municipality was contacted for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of going to print.
