Three suspects implicated in a robbery in Newcastle on November 19, were apprehended in KwaMashu Hostel at Kholwa Road, Durban, on Friday, December 11.
The men had allegedly been part of a group of 12 suspects who were cornered by police in Seven Oaks, Greytown, on November 20.
The suspects opened fire on the police, who returned fire. Six of the suspects were killed and three others injured, while three absconded.
The arrests were made through a special intelligence-driven operation by the Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit, SAPS Special Task Force, Durban K9 and Pietermaritzburg Flying Squad.
Police seized an unlicensed firearm, as well as 78 rounds of ammunition.
Detained at Camperdown Police Station, the men have been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, attempted murder and armed robbery.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said the police would continue with similar operations.
