41 firearms recovered in a week

The confiscated firearms comprise 32 pistols, three homemade firearms, a pellet gun, three shotguns and two rifles

With the highest number of suspects arrested and unlicensed firearms recovered in the KwaZulu-Natal province over the festive season, the SAPS have reason to celebrate when 41 unlicensed firearms were recovered in a one-week operation.

The operation ran from January 10 until 17 throughout the province.

A total of 40 suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. More than 660 different types of ammunition was also recovered during the operation. The confiscated firearms comprise 32 pistols, three homemade firearms, a pellet gun, three shotguns and two rifles.

The suspects have appeared in various magistrate’s courts across the province.

All the recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic tests to check if they were used in any other crimes in the country.

“We are pleased with the recent recoveries of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Officers will continue to work tirelessly and ensure that our province is free from unlicensed firearms.

“I also want to remind the lawful owners of legal firearms that they must please make sure they renew their firearm licences at their nearest police station. They must take extra precautions to safeguard their firearms and always lock them in a safe if they are not in their physical possession,” said Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni (KZN Provincial Commissioner).
