In the early hours of January 15, police arrested a 34-year-old man in possession of an unlicensed firearm near Pomeroy.
Newcastle Public Order Police teamed up with Umzinyathi Intelligence, and tracked the suspect down at his home in the Gqohi area.
SAPS spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane, said the arresting officers confiscated a 9mm pistol while searching the property. They also recovered police uniforms in his possession.
The suspect made his first appearance before the Msinga Magistrate’s Court later that day. However, he was remanded in custody until January 19. The outcome of the proceedings was yet to be disclosed at the time of publication.
“The recent successes of the recovered firearms prove that our members are working tirelessly to confiscate firearms that are in the hands of criminals. With community participation, we are turning the tide against crime,” concluded KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
