Hawkers at the Terminus Taxi Rank have been accused of selling pirated DVDs by a shopkeeper in the area.
“They have been doing it openly for about two or three months,” said the business owner, who wished to remain anonymous.
The business owner claimed he had taken the issue up with the police, but the problem persisted.
“The police come here, take them into custody, and a week later the men are back selling their DVDs, and harassing people to get their goods sold,” he said.
Captain Shooz Magudulela, police spokesperson, responded with a caution for those selling and purchasing pirated DVDs.
“People can be arrested for dealing in counterfeit DVDs. Most people selling the DVDs are charged and fined up to R1 000, depending on how many times they have been arrested and if they have a criminal record,” he explained.
Residents purchasing the illegal DVDs could also land themselves in hot water, and be charged for purchasing counterfeit products.
Captain Magudulela urged people to report anyone selling pirated DVDs, by contacting the police station on 034 314 6158/6159 or the Charge Office on 034 314 6235.
