According to SPCA staff, animals are often euthanised after donating blood, but Cornè Slabbert, who was present at the procedure, intervened before the lethal injection could be administered to Liefie.
Liefie has recovered and looks lovingly at Cornè who could not find it in his heart to have her put down after the blood transfusion.
Love comes in many forms.
Sometimes the most unconditional love comes from the other side of a wet nose and a furry snout.
Author, MK Clinton, once wrote, “The world would be a nicer place if everyone had the ability to love as unconditionally as a dog.”

Local vet, Dr Loubser Theron, made a call to Vryheid SPCA to request their assistance as a donor was needed to give Slash the lifesaving blood he so desperately required and an aptly named two year old Greyhound cross was selected from the SPCA kennels. Liefie, who joined the SPCA family at the beginning of January, was taken to Dr Theron’s surgery, where she would become Slash’s second chance at life.
Xanell’s father, Christiaan Fritze, recalls his encounter with Dr Theron, upon his arrival at the surgery with Slash, “He was absolutely magnificent with Slash. Such a compassionate man,” accounted Fritze. “Dr Theron is just one of those people who makes you feel at ease when you arrive, one of those people who, when you meet them, you just know you’ve gone to the right place. He is full of smiles and passionate about his work and you can tell that he has a strong love for animals”

“I can’t thank him enough for what he did for Slash and our family. He really went the extra mile.”
According to SPCA staff, animals are often euthanised after donating blood, but Cornè Slabbert, who was present at the procedure, intervened before the lethal injection could be administered to Liefie.
“Liefie is such a playful and affectionate dog,” said Cornè. “I couldn’t bear to see her put down. She deserved another chance at life. A chance to find a loving home.”
Liefie was taken back to the SPCA where Cornè made certain she received a little extra TLC while she recovered from the blood donation. It did not take long for Liefie to regain her playful composure and she was back to herself in no time, perhaps even unaware of the impact she had made on the lives of a family who couldn’t bear to lose their beloved Rottweiler, Slash.

One thing that Liefie seems completely aware of as she looks lovingly at her rescuer, however, is that she owes her life to Cornè.
