Vehicles parked in the street are a target

In most instances, multiple vehicles have been targeted overnight, with the owners only realising what has happened in the morning

Ladysmith police have noted that vehicles parked in the street or in open parking lots situated at blocks of flats are more vulnerable to theft. In particular, blocks of flats situated in Alexander Road, Forbes Street and Quality Street have seen incidents of theft out of motor vehicles. In most instances, multiple vehicles have been targeted overnight, with the owners only realising what has happened the following morning.

While police have stepped up activities in these areas, an appeal is made to the public to park their vehicles in a secure location overnight so that the opportunity to commit theft out of or from motor vehicles can be reduced.

Remove any valuable possessions from the vehicle and ensure that nothing is visible from the outside, which may tempt someone to break into your vehicle. An effective alarm system can also be a great deterrent.

Report any suspicious activity in the neighbourhood to police.

If you are in the unfortunate position of being a victim of crime, call police immediately.

Protect the crime scene – refrain from touching anything and prevent others from doing so too. Limit movement across the crime scene and on arrival of police, point out anything out of the ordinary you may have found or any potential evidence you may have spotted. Do so without picking up or removing these items.
