SAPS warns about vehicle theft

Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Department has issued a communiqué regarding vehicle awareness in the Amajuba District on February 25.

More people are falling victim to car theft related crime; therefore The SAPS has compiled the following list of precautions to avoid becoming a statistic.

– If you are planning to go on a trip, ensure that your vehicle is in a good condition before leaving.

– Ensure that the fuel tank of your vehicle always has sufficient fuel, as you would not want to be stranded next to the road.

– Always make sure your vehicle’s doors are locked and keep the windows closed.

– Do not leave your vehicle unlocked, even if you think you might only be away for a minute.

– Avoid stopping at remote places.

– At night time, always make sure your vehicle is parked in a well lit area.

– If someone stops you next to the road and you don’t feel comfortable, do not talk to them; rather just drive away.

– If possible, limit your trips at night or at take someone along with you.

– Vary the routes you travel to work and back, if possible.

– If approached by a stranger while in your car, drive off and press your hooter to attract the attention of other drivers.

– If strangers loiter near or at your driveway, rather drive past. If they continue to loiter, report them to your nearest police station.

– Car thieves may stage a minor accident so they can approach your car.

– If your car is bumped from behind and you do not feel comfortable with the individual(s) involved in the situation, drive to the nearest police station for help.

– If you find yourself in a situation where you are being forced out your vehicle, do not reach for your purse or valuables, leave everything behind and exit the vehicle. Your life is more valuable than your possessions.

– Do not resist if in a hi-jacking situation, especially if the suspect has a weapon.

– Give up your vehicle with no questions asked and move away.

– If possible, join a lift club. This limits the risk of becoming a victim of car theft.

– Avoid giving strangers a lift.

– A gear lock is an affordable and a effective anti-theft device.

– If possible, put a mirror up against the front wall of your garage in order to see if someone might have followed you into your yard.

– Do not open your garage doors before your gates are closed.
