DHS Spartans vanquish five times Spar champs
As inexperienced as the team is, they showed great promise in the start of what will be a great season to follow.
On Saturday, a young and inexperienced Dundee High team, that included nine new players, played at the annual Spar tournament. Nerves and shakes were in evidence as the girls took to the fields at St. Dominic’s, who are boasting a beautiful new Astro Turf pitch.
The team stalwart, Chantè Groenewald, got things going with two beautiful goals against Utrecht and junior, Jessica Shanahan, netted the winning goal against Ferrum High School, making Dundee High the first team to beat the Giants in the tournament’s five-year history.
During an encounter that could not live up to the previous display, Dundee was victorious over Pongola Academy due to an amazing strike by Cheryl Ngobese. After being undefeated in their pool, the girls were unable to finish against a crash tackling Sarel Cilliers goalie and her team that left the girls 2-1 down after a deciding penalty shoot-out in the semifinals.
Congratulations to Gabby Carter for scoring during the defense fest. As inexperienced as the team is, they showed great promise in the start of what will be a great season to follow.
A special thanks to, former Spartans, Soené Kollesky and Simone Millar who came all the way from Potch to support their former side. A big thank you to all the parents who were able to attend.
Let us not forget the boys from Dundee High that ably provided water and construction skills on the day.
Last, but definitely not least, DHS would like to show their appreciation to the sponsors, Zinoju Coal, RA Burns and T-shirts for Afrika for providing excellent on and off field kit.

Netball:
On February 20, the first team netball girls came third in the tournament. Their scores were as follows: NHS 1- DHS 7; Pionier14 – DHS 7; u/16 NHS 12 – DHS 05; Ferrum 18-DHS 4. The girls played very well and they enjoyed the tournament. DHS appreciates their excellent behaviour on and off the court.
A special congratulations to Simangaye Nkwanyana who was selected as the best defender of the tournament. Well done Smah!
