Shakespeare comes to DHS

Every year, the Playhouse Company comes to Dundee High School in order to make Othello come alive on stage.

Othello is the prescribed play for Grade 12 literature and Clare Mortimer (director) and her team feel that it is extremely important to share the beauty of theatre with the learners.

Merely reading the play is not sufficient as you get a more comprehensive understanding of the play when the complex Acts, which take place in Venice and Cyprus, unfold before your eyes.

The school received the following responses from learners:
“I really loved how Darren King played the role of Brabantio because he was really funny and everyone seemed to enjoy his part in the play. Overall, Othello is a great play that everyone can learn from and relate to because every living human being gets jealous and jealousy can make you do crazy things.” (Minenhle Ndlovu)
“My favourite character is Iago. He is villainous in everything that he says and does. He brought life into the play and made the drama seem real. I liked how he laughed at Othello’s misery.” (Asanda Khoza)
“The play really made me think about life in general. It shows you that one mistake could cause you to be so angry that you leave your reasoning and ability to think logically behind. You really need to choose your friends wisely and actually get to know them before you trust them.” (Mikaile Nanan)

 
DHS hockey at Voortrekker in PMB

On Saturday the first team girls took part in the Voortrekker tournament. The usual tournament format was replaced by seven matches of 14 minutes each, with the emphasis on pre season practice. The girls fared well in their matches which were unfortunately too short to capitalise on the many opportunities to score.

Of the seven games DHS won one, lost two and drew four. Congratulations on these results.

Thank you to the parents and Mr Lippke, the driver, for waking up at the early hours of the morning to ensure the girls had a successful day.

 
KZN athletics in Durban
DHS is tremendously proud of the following learners who were selected to compete at the KZN athletics meeting which took place in Durban during the weekend.
Emogéne van der Schyff, Lwandile Mdladla, Lethiwe Mathonsi, Sizwe Malokoane, Jan Frederik van Zyl and Dean Lambert. The results of their achievements will be available in next week’s publication.
