DHS’ big talkers win accolades

On March 15, two enthusiastic teams left Dundee High to compete in the second round of the prestigious Daily News/Rotary public speaking competition. It was held at Sarel Cilliers High School where two teams from three schools (Sarel, DHS and Inkamana) took to the stage in order to impress three acclaimed judges.
These judges were Helen Stevens, who is also a published writer, Jenny Mthembu and Ntokozo Majola. It is significant to mention that all three judges were highly impressed by Hafsa Khan’s performance as a public speaker. She was named the speaker of the evening. Trishen Pillay, Nomalungelo Mkhize and Krushil Sewmangal were invited to attend the semi-final round at St Dominic’s Academy which will take place on the April 7. They intrigued the judges with their insightful Rotary focuses on problems that affect the community. Rotary encourages learners to find solutions to complicated issues and this competition focuses more on factual evidence rather than the technicalities of public speaking or figurative information. DHS is extremely proud of the learners for showing insight

Knapgedaan Jan-Frederik.

The learners left early on Saturday in order to support the hockey, rugby and netball at Voortrekker High in Pietermaritzburg. The learners camped at Midmar Dam and had an amazing time. On Race Day, everything went well. The athletes had a choppy swim and it was extremely hot! Christiaan van Dyk managed to come second in his age group.
Sport against St. Dominic’s Academy
On March 16, many excited teams travelled to St Dominics to compete in some of the first matches of the season. The scores were as follows: Netball: u/15 won 16 – 5,2nd team won 18 – 1, 1st team won 41 – 5. Girls’ hockey:1st team drew 0 – 0, 2nd team won 1 – 0. Boys’ hockey: 1st team won 1- 0, 2nd team won 3 – 0
Chess: The first chess matches of the season took place at St Dominic’s Academy in Newcastle. The games were played in the open pavilion on their spectacular sports fields. It was a treat for the chess players to take part amongst the Netball and Hockey games rather than being stuck in a hot classroom. The competitive atmosphere motivated our players to perform at their best and DHS managed to win 7 games out of a total of 13 games played. Congratulations goes out to the following learners who won their matches: Ridwaan Ntombela, Pariksha Sewpaul, Sinaye Masuku, Claudio Gopie, Musa Radebe, Luyanda Lukele, Sithembiso Ndwandwe.
Voortrekker Netball
The Netball girls did extremely well at the Voortrekker Sport Day! They won four out of seven games and the scores were as follows: DHS 5 – EMP 2, DHS 10 – KE 3, DHS 4 – PN 6, DHS 9 – Sarel 3, DHS 3 – KUS 8, DHS 3 – LOF 4, DHS 6 – Kings 1. DHS is looking forward to an exciting netball season ahead.
