Rugby takes local teen overseas
Christo hopes to get a contract while still at school to take his rugby career further

Christo Barnard may have started as a “bulletjie rugby” player, but he has now grown into what one would call a “bul”. Not only a rugby player, but also someone who enjoys hunting and fishing.
This 17-year-old, who was born and raised in Ladysmith, has been growing into the sport and taking it more seriously than ever.
He is currently a second team member and a reserve for the first team at Glenwood High School in Durban.
When asked if he has a role model or if he looks up to any other players, he said he simply does not like to idolise other players because then one starts to be like them and he wants to be himself on the field.
This rising rugby star is a Grade 11 scholar at Glenwood and was chosen last year to take part in trials in a team of 40 players, which would later be cut down to a team of 30. He has made it into the final team that will be travelling to Japan to take part in the under 18 Sanix World Cup on April 28, where they will spend two weeks playing a total of three games. If they make it into the finals, they will have to play four to five games.
He hopes to get a contract while still at school to take his rugby career further.
His most inspiring quote is: “There are two important days in a man’s life; the day he is born and the day he realises why.”
Christo has two older siblings, a sister and a brother, and says it was his brother and father who got him into the sport. His brother taught him since he was little and also used to play rugby at school.
Christo’s entire family are rugby supporters, and support him. He enjoys rugby because it is not an individual sport, but rather a team sport and he enjoys being on the field with his friends.
