Plans to make residents proud and aware of their local history are going ahead thanks to Tourism Dundee’s ‘plaque project’.
Over 60 smartly designed plaques will be put up at historical and noteworthy buildings and areas in both Dundee and Glencoe.
Some of the buildings identified include St. James Church, the old Court House, NG Kerk, Hindu Temple, Mosque, Municipal Power Station, Scottish Lodge, Wesleyan Church, Melusi Mission, Cottage Hospital, site of the curfew bell (near the present day Capitec Bank) and more.
The area is rightly proud of its historical heritage.
The plaques, designed by Pam McFadden of Talana Museum, are attractive yet made of chromadek, which makes them not very attractive to scrap metal thieves.
The plaques contain basic information of the building and there are also plans to put in a digitally enhanced code, which when scanned by a cellphone, will take the viewer to a website containing fuller details of the building.
George Adalis of Charlie’s SuperSpar has agreed to sponsor the first 15 plaques. An official launch event is being planned for next month – so watch this space. Anyone wanting to give input should contact Tourism Dundee at 034 212 2121 (ask for the tourism office).
