Armed response on the cards for Dannhauser?

Residents look at other ways to combat crime

Dannhauser residents are taking matters into their own hands following a string of break-ins in the town.
Community members packed into the Madressa Hall last week for a public meeting to address the issue of crime and look at setting up an armed response unit in the town. Special guest, Andre Potgieter, from Ithemba Security, addressed residents about what his company could offer the town. Mr Potgieter said that if they received 50 or more customers wanting to fit their alarm systems, they would set up a 24-hour armed response team in the town.
Mr Potgieter spoke of his company’s successes in areas such as Newcastle, where the crime rate has dropped. He also promised residents that should they set up an armed response in the town, it would take them no longer than four minutes to report to the scene.

One shop owner, however, said that thieves could clear her out in two minutes, so four minutes would not help her.

Mr Potgieter added that his company had a good working relationship with the police in Newcastle and were hoping to have one with the local police as well in their aid to combat crime. A committee of five members where then elected to assist the company set up in town and liaise with community members who wished to sign up.
After the meeting, many residents signed up for security as residents look for other ways to deal with the surge in crime.
