Umtshezi Municipality has assured readers that the damaged section of road adjacent to Princess Park will be repaired.

Last week a reader pointed out that the damaged section was a hazard to motorists, as it narrowed the road down to one lane.
Increased volumes of traffic on this road, especially due to the road rehabilitation in Alfred Street, meant that the element of danger has escalated.

Responding to the resident’s requests to repair the damaged section of road, Umtshezi’s Acting Municipal Manager Elphas Dladla said that repairs will be affected but did not give a time frame.

Explaining the reason for the broken part of road, Mr Dladla said that a blocked sewerage manhole had to be repaired by Uthukela District Municipality.

“In order for this manhole to be unblocked, the road had to be dug up. Uthukela District Municipality has brought the manhole cover above ground so that it is level with the road. In future, the road will not be tampered with when the unblocking occurs,” added Mr Dladla.

Commenting on the road damage in Alfred and Connor streets, which was also highlighted in last week’s newspaper, Mr Dladla said that the damage was done by heavy motor vehicles that frequent the road and not due to poor workmanship.

“This road will be repaired once again. There is a need for stringent control of heavy duty trucks within our central business district,” commented Mr Dladla.
