DHS sport against VHS
On May 7, a group of very enthusiastic teams travelled to Vryheid to compete against Vryheid High School.
It was extremely cold and the athletes, coaches and supporters enjoyed hot pancakes and coffee whilst watching an array of nail-biting games. The DHS athletes proved once again that they are fighters and played their hearts out till the very end. It is beautiful to see that the dedication, discipline and hard practices are paying off in the form of inspirational performances.
Netball: u/14 A lost 9-14, u/14 B drew 7-7, u/15 A lost 6-25, 2nd team won 12 – 7 and the 1st team won 20 – 12. Girls’ hockey: It was extremely interesting to see how the girls performed on fields that are showing the horrendous effects of the debilitating drought. It was truly a test of skill and patience as the respective teams from Dundee and Vryheid fought for the win.

DHS is proud to report the following scores: u/14 lost 4-2, u/16 won 1-0, 2nd team drew 0-0 and the first team had an amazing game and played together as a team. Jessica Shannahan scored a beautiful deflection from a penalty corner and then a second field goal later in the game to have a final score of 2-0 win for DHS. The first team girls will also be waitressing at Spur on May 17 and 24 to raise funds for their team.
DHS congratulates Gabby Carter on being invited to the second round of trials at St. John’s Academy in Pietermaritzburg for the u/16 Country District team.
Boys’ hockey: The boys’ games were very exciting to watch. The second team drew 2-2. They were 2-0 down after the first half and fought back with a lot of good team work and perfect passing between team mates. They scored two goals within the last 10 minutes of the game, proving that refusing to give up is half the battle won. The 1st team boys won 1-0. They played a hard game and there were numerous great tackles by a defender, Deandré Pillay and great ball distribution by Larnell Nero with his superb overheads. Carl Thom ran like a super striker in the attacking line and Andile Ntshangase made himself very useful in the game with perfect execution of clean channeling and passing.

Rugby: u/14 lost 44 – 10, u/15 lost 8-7, u/16 won 35 – 12, 2nd team won 5 – 0 and the 1st team 20 – 18.
This was one of the most exciting rugby games that the school has seen in a while! All the spectators’ eyes were glued to the field as a try was scored and converted in the last few minutes of the game. Estiaan Coetzee scored an amazing game changing try and Brandon Grondein converted the try after he showed big match temperament by not letting the pressure get to him.
