Entrants are also encouraged to dress up like Mahatma Gandhi, for which prizes in the junior and senior categories will be awarded

Lace up your walking shoes and be seen at the 5km Gandhi Colour Walk this Sunday. Fun, entertainment, music, dance and a colourful surprise will be in store for those who participate in the fun walk, which is hosted by the Estcourt Hindu Cultural Society (EHCS).
Entrants are also encouraged to dress up like Mahatma Gandhi, for which prizes in the junior and senior categories will be awarded. The start and finish is at the Forderville Primary School Athletic Stadium and registration begins at 7.30am.
Adults pay R20, scholars R10 and for pensioners and senior citizens, entry is free. The 5km walk begins at 8.30am from the gate close to the Sai Clinic. Walkers will pass through First and Third avenues, turn up into Canna Avenue, proceed left into Gladiola, walk through Bougainvillea and Dahlia, across to Mimosa, make their way back to Canna Avenue and finish at the track.
Medals will be awarded to all participants. There are also many prizes up for grabs. EHCS President Sudarshan Bandu explains: “There will be plenty of lucky draw prizes as well as a prize each for the best junior and senior Gandhi look-alike. Schools with the highest number of entrants will also receive a prize.”
Mr Bandu adds that water points will be available along the route and residents should wear comfortable clothes and shoes. When dressing, bear in mind that a refreshing spray of coloured water will be aimed at walkers as they pass certain points.
When asked what sparked the idea of a Gandhi Colour Walk, Mr Bandu said first and foremost the initiative was to foster a community spirit.
“The colour represents our rainbow nation and Gandhi symbolises peace and non-violence. Our idea is to use the two concepts together and bring awareness about cordiality and living together in peace,” he added.
So, don’t miss out on the Gandhi Colour Walk this Sunday, see you there.
