Dipping and diving in the skies above
Current SA champ Nigel Hopkins was also at the airfield with his plane to take part in the competition

Is it a bird or is it a plane? It is in fact a plane; an upside-down plane…
Brave pilots were seen doing flips with their planes in an aerobatics competition at the Ladysmith Airfield on Thursday.
Current SA champ Nigel Hopkins was also at the airfield with his plane to take part in the competition.
Nigel is the 2015 SA champ, as the 2016 championships have not yet been held. At age 43, he still has a head for heights and a stomach strong enough to do all sorts of hair-raising stunts up in the sky.
As a father of three, he says he often takes his children up with him. However, his new plane only has one seat, so he cannot do this in his new piece of machinery.
Nigel says he has been flying “since birth”, or since he can remember. It’s no wonder his passion for aviation took off as it did, as his whole family flies. His role models include Sean D Tucker and Rob Holland. “I strongly believe you should live your dreams,” says Nigel, and he definitely lives by that motto.
Nigel is an outdoor sports kind of guy and enjoys skiing, but his main passion is flying.
Together with other pilots, he will be competing in the Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics at the Greyville horse racing track, where five of the world’s best will be battling it out in the skies above.
