Dannhauser Primary chess stars make their move thanks to Mrs Mkhize
Once a major force in the local chess scene, Dannhauser Primary is slowly returning to its former glory days.
The school is producing chess stars who have made not the only the school proud, but also the district proud. Ten learners from the school participated in an Amajuba District chess tournament and finished second.
One learner, Sikhakhane Mkhosi, was also selected for the Amajuba District team that participated in the annual Jacob Zuma Chess Tournament held at Nkandla.
The Amajuba District team, managed by Gugu Mkhize, came home with the gold. Mrs Mkhize has been instrumental in molding the new crop of chess champions and was honoured by the district for her achievements.
Mrs Mkhize was named as the Amajuba District Sports Administrator of the Year.
While it was a major achievement for her, meeting the president was a feather in her cap that Mrs Mkhize can’t forget.
With the queen, Mrs Mkhize, leading a new batch of pawns into battle, expect future chess champions to be crowned at Dannhauser Primary.
