Update: Pupils convicted and sentenced for public violence
The group used stones and rocks to pelt other learners

19 high school pupils were found guilty of public violence in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court today (Wednesday). 13 of them were sentenced to a R1000 fine each, while six are juveniles and were given a six-month suspended sentence.
All 19 accused are also held jointly liable for paying back the cost of the property damaged by them during the violence, namely two buses and the school.
A 20th accused is to appear in court on Friday.
The conviction and sentencing stems from an incident on May 16 in Weenen, where a group of high school children resorted to disruptive and riotous behaviour in an attempt to prevent other children from going to school.
The group used stones and rocks to pelt other learners. Two buses and school windows were damaged.
Police arrested 20 of the children, aged between 15 and 19 years old.
