Residents fume ‘after all night party disturbs neighbourhood’

Residents say they are considering a class action after a night of revelry disturbed their neighbourhood

Residents in the Oldacre, Colley and McKenzie Street area are this morning fuming after an all night party at the Kallies Stadium saw revellers partying until 6am this morning.

The residents told the Courier that the ‘hip-hop’ party had started at 4pm on Saturday.  “People were openly drinking in the street, urinating, littering – the police could not do anything. They were too many people.  Some of us could not even get out of our driveways as cars were doubled parked,” said one resident on Oldacre Street, adding that some of the roads had been barricaded to traffic.

“What is worse that residents launched a petition against the holding of a party at Kallies Stadium because we know what happened last time.  Although about 40 of us signed the petition and handed it in, the municipality – to whom we pay rates and taxes – just laughed it off.  We are considering a class action against the municipality,” said another resident.

They claimed that the municipality had never asked residents’ opinion on the holding of the party at the stadium.

Workmen- who seemed to be private – were seen cleaning up the masses of liquor bottles that had been strewn around.  Many were smashed.  A barricade was still up on Colley Street much to the annoyance of residents some of whom wanted to attend early morning church services.

When the Courier was called to the seen, several revellers were still staggering around in the area.  A policeman who was on patrol last night said the ‘municipality had granted the organisers permission to go ahead with the party and the only thing they could do was to try and ensure no laws were broken’.

Mahommed Essak , writing on the Courier’s Facebook page, said : “I called the police station this morning – the commanding officer said that the organisers have got a permit to allow them be there till whatever time they like and also the bylaws allow them.”

The municipality has been asked for a comment and this will, hopefully, be published tomorrow.
