ASHLEY Naudé is on top of the world as far as Supercomputing is concerned.
The talented Vryheid brainiac was part of the South African team sent to Frankfurt, Germany, to compete in the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) Student Cluster Championship two weeks ago.
This year, the South African team claimed its third win of the Student Cluster Championship, having won before in 2013 and 2014 but coming in second in 2015 to a Chinese team from Tsinghua University.

According to the ISC website, the purpose of this competition is to introduce the next generation of students to the high performance computing community and its technology.
This friendly and spirited competition, features 12 student teams of six undergraduate and even high school students, from different parts of the world. These student teams compete in real time over a three-day period on the ISC Exhibition floor to build a small cluster computer of their own design and run a series of HPC benchmarks and applications.

Ashley is currently studying Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University, and her expenses as well as that of her team mates, Andries Bingani, Avraham Bank, Craig Bester, Sabeehah Ismail and Leanne Johnson, were covered by sponsors Dell and Mellanox.

The team reflects the dedication of the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC is a division of the CSIR) toward gender and racial equality with a diverse and mixed- gender team.

“I have to say that this (South Africa’s win) is extraordinary,” said Thomas Sterling of HPC (High Performance Computing), who has helped officiate along with Gila Shainer of Mellanox. “Last year, I said those South Africanteams are pretty good. They came in second last year and first two times before that. This is a remarkable performance.”

The Vryheid Herald congratulates Ashley and her team on their amazing win for South Africa.
