IN A refreshing turn of events, AbaQulusi Municipality has responded swiftly to an urgent leak at Grootgewacht Dam.
Last Tuesday, AfriForum Chairman for Vryheid, Andrè Van Der Walt, reported that the leak which had led to Grootgewacht Dam being shut off, had finally been located.
“There’s not much water left in Bloemveld,” said Van Der Walt.
“AbaQulusi needs to repair this before the water in Bloemveld runs out,” he added.
Van Der Walt confirmed that no water was being lost due to the leak, as Grootgewacht had, in fact been closed once the leak was discovered and that water, at that time, was being pumped from Bloemveld.
The exact location of the leak had only been discovered last Tuesday after draining farmer, Horst Hellberg’s, dam and exposing the damaged section of pipe.
Although it was initially anticipated that obtaining the parts to repair the leak could cause some delay, this was not the case and AbaQulusi Municipality managed to promptly rectify the situation, repairing the leak by replacing two lengths of pipe by 5pm on Wednesday afternoon.
Van Der Walt commended the team who attended to the matter on their prompt response and added that, barring any further leaks or water disasters, with correct management and conservative utilisation of the current water supply, which is now being solely pumped from Grootgewacht, as Bloemveld has been confirmed empty, the community may very well be able to survive until the next decent rainfall.
