Snow Warning: Cold spell hits area with a vengeance
No snow expected in Van Reenen today, just cold and wet conditions

With reports of snow/sleet falling in the Nottingham Road and Haltikilu areas, brine-filled tankers have been deployed to spray between the N3 between Hidcote and Balgowan. RTI and N3TC have appealed to motorists and long-distance haulers to delay planned trips until the weather situation is clearer. Light rain and extremely low temperatures have been recorded along most of the N3 route in Northern KZN. Emergency services are on standby.
While heavy snow is still expected in parts of the KZN Midlands, Van Reenen is expected to miss out on any heavy snowfall. Snowfall in the area is expected to be light flurries late at night, followed by rain which will wash it away. So those thinking of heading up to Van Reenen to see the snow will most likely be in for a cold waste of time.
Motorists on snow sight-seeing trips are a danger, as unprepared tourists can become costly rescue missions. An appeal is made: If you do not need to be on the roads today, then don’t.
“Should you have no other option but to travel, we advise you stay cognizant of weather warnings and the possibility of associated road closures. Conditions may change quickly, thus it is recommended to be well prepared before departure and stay up-to-date while travelling,” says N3TC.
Pack extra blankets, food and refreshments in your vehicle in the event that you may be caught in a lengthy closure. People with medical conditions should ensure that they travel with sufficient medical supplies and medication.
Heavy snowstorms often cause power failures, and communication systems may be under pressure. Keep in mind that you may not be able to make contact with people if mobile and telecommunication networks are down.
Remember weather forecasts can change within minutes. Stay informed.
