Green lights for the ‘Watch’ given the green light

GREEN lights flashing in the darkness were once a reassuring indication that Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch was nearby, keeping criminals at bay.

There were mixed reactions when, several months ago, patrolling members were no longer permitted to use the green lights. Despite the fact that these were the most visible form of identification on patrolling vehicles, especially at night, it was found that private vehicles fitted with flashing green lights were in contravention to the law, as they are legally only permitted on disaster management vehicles.

After months of negotiation and deliberation, Neighbourhood Watch and the relevant authorities reached a reasonable compromise. Patrolling members may now utilise fixed or stationary green lights on their vehicles while on patrol.

According to Head Office Manager for Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch, Marcel Beeslaar, most of the green lights purchased by the patrolling members can be modified to comply with the new amendment to the green light issue. Patrolling members who wish to have them modified can contact Marcel to make the necessary arrangements to do so.
