Uelzen gets into Olympic spirit
Uelzen's very own Crazy Olympicon was made possible on the eve of the real opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.
Over 240 pupils in teams, representing 30 countries competing in 10 events, and the scene is set for Uelzen’s very own Crazy Olympic Games 2016! What a great time was had by staff and pupils alike on Friday, on the eve of the real opening ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.
The Olympic flag was hoisted following the parade of nations and the torch arriving in the arena and once Jonathan Bohmer (the Brazilian captain) had taken the pledge of honour on behalf of all athletes, the games began.
From crazy hurdles to a new take on golf, bowling, javelin and archery, among others, grade 7 captains led their teams through the events and competition was fierce. It was the Greek team, led by Hamish Grierson, who triumphed and were awarded the gold medals by Uelzen’s very own Brazilian vice-president (Evan Jones). Refreshments in the ‘Olympic village’ completed what was not only a great learning experience but a fun way to learn.
