Join today’s march in memory of the mine workers

The 8km walk starts at Pensymons Street (off Karel Landman St) at 2pm and ends at Talana Museum where there will be refreshments and craft stalls.

If you are keen for some exercise today, how about joining the walk to be held from 2pm that marks the historical mine workers’ march of 1899?

With the promise of war between Britain and the Transvaal, in October 1899 7 000 Zulu mineworkers walked away from the conflict.  They trekked from Johannesburg to Hattingspruit in just ten days!  Led by a son of the king, iNkosi Pheka kaDinizulu and a young Natal official, John Marwick, they frustrated the Boer advance on Natal by walking right through their lines and on to freedom!   The “March” is commemorated at the University of the Witwatersrand (where it started) and in Volksrust (the half-way place) with plaques and in Dundee by the memorial walk!
