“Rising life expectancy is contributing to a rapid increase in the numbers and prevalence of chronic diseases like dementia,” a press release read.
According to La Gratitude, Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia.
It is an irreversible disease of the brain cells, which causes a person’s thinking and memory to deteriorate, and affects all aspects of life.
Alzheimer’s as a physical disease, affects the brain too.
“During the course of the disease, the structure of the brain is affected and cells die. People with Alzheimer’s have a shortage of important chemicals, involved with the transmission of messages within the brain.”
Symptoms include, but are not limited to:
– A memory problem which worsens over time, and is not caused by alcohol abuse or head trauma.
– Difficulty naming objects, finding the right word and often speaking nonsense.
– Trouble dressing, especially with zips and buttons.
– A disregard for personal hygiene and physical appearance.
– Extreme and unprovoked mood swings.
– Impaired judgement and unusual behaviour.
– Getting lost in familiar places and later within their own home.
– Inability to recognise family and friends.
– Increased suspicion of others.
Anyone who shows these symptoms needs to see a doctor urgently.
A psychiatrist or neurologist will perform a series of test, in order to exclude other treatable causes of dementia.
