‘Nurse, nurse there is a roach in my food’
"We apologise for this very unfortunate incident and would also like to assure the community of our commitment to provide clean, safe hospital care."

Mediclinic Newcastle has apologised after Shamilla Ramkubar of Glencoe found a cockroach in the plate of food she was given while in hospital.
Miss Ramkubar, who was on a vegetarian diet, was served the food on October 9. Mariette Claasen, Doctor Relationship Manager with Mediclinic Newcastle, told the Courier that the ‘hospital and its out-sourced service providers take great care in providing the best possible service to patients.’
“It is extremely unfortunate that Miss Ramkubar had such a negative experience at our facility. Members of the hospital management team, as well as the management of the Catering services, paid Miss Ramkubar a visit and apologised for the incident while she was still hospitalised. A thorough investigation was launched and the supplier of the ingredients used in the meal was informed of the incident.
“The kitchen, where all patient meals are prepared, is fumigated on a weekly basis by a reputable company. The premises was also inspected on Monday, October 17, by the Health Sector of Newcastle Municipality and they received a positive report with special commendation to the cleanliness and record keeping in the kitchen.
“We apologise for this very unfortunate incident and would also like to assure the community of our commitment to provide clean, safe hospital care.”
