Update: Hawks nab suspected syndicate robbers

The three men have been charged for being in possession of housebreaking tools

Three men who are alleged to have been on their way to break into a business premises are appearing in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court today (November 3) following their arrest yesterday.

It is alleged that the men, one aged 30 and the other two 40, were on their way to break into a business premises in the Bergville CBD when they were intercepted by a crack team of police officers from the Hawks and the Provincial Task Team, deployed in the uThukela Cluster.

The three suspects, who were travelling in a minibus when they were stopped by police, are believed to be part of the syndicate of heavily-armed robbers that ‘hit’ five different Boxer outlets across the breadth of KZN in no less than six hours on Tuesday. A police officer was shot dead in the Ixopo robbery.

Various tools that could be used to break into a store were found in the minibus. The three men have been charged for being in possession of housebreaking tools, and the vehicle was seized as evidence.

Major General Bheki Langa (KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner) praised the team for preventing the crime from being committed. “Police in the province are on the lookout for suspects and we are warning all criminals that they will be caught and will face the music,” said Major General Langa.
