Hydro Symposium at Ingula

This year was a bumper year, with around 100 delegates from 12 countries attending

Eskom, through its Peaking Generation team, hosted an outstanding 28th African Hydro Symposium at lngula from October 25 to 27. The symposium is held in a different African country each year.

This year was a bumper year, with around 100 delegates from 12 countries (eight African and four European) attending.

The big draw card was, no doubt, the fact that it was held at Africa’s largest and newest pumped storage scheme, lngula.

The countries represented were Egypt, Malawi, Zambia, Angola, Lesotho, Uganda, Namibia, Croatia, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom and, of course, South Africa.

The symposium brings together hydro experts from all corners of Africa and other countries, and is the ideal opportunity to exchange ideas, share knowledge and experience, and network.

The programme consisted of plenary sessions, workshops, site visits and informal events, including a gala dinner, an lndian-themed dinner and a Zulu-themed dinner. The theme for this year was ‘Sustainable Water, Sustainable Power’.

In the keynote address at the opening ceremony, Peaking Generation general manager Avi Singh provided insight on hydro-generation and the developments in South Africa, and emphasised the impact of the drought on hydro-generation in Africa.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration within Africa to ensure that our precious water resource is sustained while ensuring adequate power supply to stimulate economic growth.

In his speech at the gala dinner, on behalf of Brian Molefe, Abram Masango said: “The theme is appropriate as it demonstrates the need to be mindful of ensuring water sustainability, while delivering on the electricity needs of South Africa to ensure that socio-economic prosperity is realised in tandem.”

In 2017, the African Hydro Symposium will be hosted by the power utility in Mozambique.
