Assault victim: “I used to be fearless”

"I have heard a bit more about the case, and apparently the suspect appeared in court on December 15. I'm not sure what that was for, but I'm hoping it means a trial date might have been set for me."

NEWCASTLE – After an horrific assault on Scott Street on November 4, Lorna Mordoch-Eaton hopes to have her day in court soon.

“I have heard a bit more about the case, and apparently the suspect appeared in court on December 15. I’m not sure what that was for, but I’m hoping it means a trial date might have been set for me,” she said.

Ms Murdoch-Eaton confirmed she managed to gather more evidence regarding her ordeal, and has since handed it over to police. She also said police claimed no CCTV footage of the assault was available.

“My friend and I have also been trying to get hold of a few people who witnessed the incident that day, hoping they would be willing to testify once a trial date is confirmed.”

She recently viewed cellphone footage of the incident, and said it was scary to see how many people the suspect managed to get involved in his attack against her.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen the photos and videos, and they distress me. I’m really scared.”

Ms Murdoch-Eaton thanked everyone who tried to assist on the day, including witnesses, the people who blocked the suspect with their cars to prevent him from escaping, and an unidentified couple who she said were extraordinarily kind to her at the time.

Aside from the constant safety fears she faces on a daily basis, Ms Murdoch-Eaton said she is now afraid of further victimisation, and hoped her day in court would see justice served and prevent the suspect from ever harming another human being again.

“See what a drip I am now? I used to be fearless. Maybe I will be again, one day.”
