AS the mother of a teenager, who is starting high school this year, local Psychological Counsellor, Nadine Pillay, offers some sound advice and words of wisdom to parents and children for the new school year.

“Since my daughter is starting high school this year, a huge milestone for her and myself as a parent, I think I may be a little more terrified than she is. There are a few tips that I found helpful to prepare for the transition.”

“Many children (and parents) may experience a variety of emotions during this transition. They may feel anxious or worried about the new school uniform, new teachers, routines and subjects and also new friends. It is normal to feel this way,” she states. “The best way to deal with this is to ask, if you’re uncertain about anything. Be a part of orientation programmes and parent gatherings and try to be as supportive as possible.”

“Listen to your child’s worries and talk about it,” she encourages. “There’s nothing wrong with letting your child know that you are also feeling a bit nervous but that you are in this together.”

“Also get to know other parents at the school,” advises Nadine. “It is important to know the parents of your child’s friends. This forms a vital support system during the high school years.”

“Keep talking to your child about school and stay in touch with how they are feeling (never mind the teenage mood swings). As always communication is key now, more than ever, as our babies become young adults. The last five years of childhood may be over in a flash. Embrace every moment and cherish every high school memory made.”

“Good luck, Gr 8s of 2017,” Nadine concludes. “This is the beginning of an epic journey.”
