Update: Prisoners escape from police custody

It is understood that the prisoners are all illegal immigrants and were dressed in civilian clothing

Prisoners escaped from a police vehicle at the Mooi River Toll Plaza earlier today (January 12).

Approximately nine awaiting trial prisoners managed to break the locks of a police transport vehicle as it slowed down at the Mooi River Toll Plaza.

The prisoners ran into an informal settlement that lies adjacent to the Toll Plaza.

It is understood that the prisoners are all illegal immigrants and were dressed in civilian clothing.

There are still uncertainties at this stage, with only the location of the escape being confirmed.

Updates will follow as soon as we have more information.
