Rains to blame for potholes?

Responding to messages and telephonic communication on roads, Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi said recent heavy rains had increased the rate of pothole formation.

NEWCASTLE CBD – The municipality continues to chase after potholes forming in Newcastle.

Within the first weeks of 2017, the state of local roads was again the focus of public ire, including a massive gash in Kirkland Street near St Oswalds Secondary School.

Staff of Technical Services said on Tuesday this problem had not been reported earlier.

Responding to messages and telephonic communication on roads, Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi said recent heavy rains had increased the rate of pothole formation.

“Also, given the challenge of the water infrastructure which is damaging the roads, it has become necessary to augment the staff with external service providers in the short term, to assist in the eradication of the backlogs.”

Cllr Nkosi said the target turnaround time after a pothole was identified was five days, provided there were no challenges with the plant for the supply of hot mix.

Shortages of surfacing materials is a common occurrence.

Cllr Nkosi added the revised plan for resealing on the balance of the available budget, would focus on mid-block parking and priority streets, namely Albert Wessels Drive and Hardwick Street.

Five other intersections were also earmarked for a reseal.

“Other roads will be prioritized in the next financial year. Areas that require emergency attention will be attended to immediately,” he concluded.
