Phumelela circuit teachers receive awards

Award categories for educators included certificates of achievement for coaching and umpiring on district, provincial and national levels, and long service awards for educators who were leaving the system after 30 or more years.

SUNNY RIDGE – Ferrum High School hosted the Phumelela Circuit Excellence Awards Prize Giving on Tuesday, January 31. Schools and educators were commended for outstanding performances of matriculants in 2016. The event was coordinated by the Deputy Principal of Amajuba High School, Charlene Lombard.

Award categories for educators included certificates of achievement for coaching and umpiring on district, provincial and national levels, and long service awards for educators who were leaving the system after 30 or more years.

Certificates were given to schools with an 80 per cent pass rate in 2014, 2015 and 2016 for Physical Science, Accounting, Mathematics and Life Science. Schools that received these awards were Amajuba High School, Hope Full Service School, Ferrum High School, Lincoln Heights Secondary, and Islamic College Newcastle.

Schools in the Phumelela Circuit that had fewer than 70 Grade 12 learners, who achieved a pass rate of 90 per cent and over in the 2016 Matric examinations were also awarded. Amajuba High School came second with a 92.5 per cent pass rate and Islamic College was placed first with a 100 per cent pass rate. Schools with more than 70 matric learners who obtained a pass rate above 90 per cent were Lincoln Heights Secondary, which was placed third with a 94.8 per cent pass rate, Hope Full Service School that came second with a 98.8 per cent pass and, Ferrum High School first with a 99.5 per cent pass rate.
