#AntiRacism: Five facts you might not have known about the xenophobic attacks in SA

The media has been flooded over the past two weeks, with attacks making the headlines once again, and the reasons for the attacks always seem to be the same; locals feel foreigners have come to SA to take over their country, resources, jobs, sell drugs and traffic their women, among other things.

Despite the low total of xenophobic deaths which are recorded and reported, thousands of deaths go unreported each year, and is just swept under the rug and left unsolved.

However, at the end of the day, these foreigners are just looking for a better life than they had in their own country, and despite their often odd methods of making money, no one deserves to be killed in such a manner.

Below are five things everyone should know about the xenopobic attacks, and the effect it has on the lives of these foreigners:

1. At least 67 people died in what was identified as xenophobic attacks between 2000 and 2008.

2. Five people were killed and hundreds were forced to flee their homes during one of South Africa’s worst xenophobic attacks in  2015.

3. Among those five people who were killed, was a 14-year-old boy who was shot during the looting.

4. President Jacob Zuma is allegedly reluctant to take action against perpetrators.

5. Foreign nationals have resorted to sleeping at police stations around the country, out of fear of being killed.
