Two security guards were shot at during an attempted hijacking of a van carrying cigarettes this morning (March 8) on the Bergville road.

The hijackers managed to force the escort vehicle off the road and a shoot-out ensued.

The van carrying cigarettes managd to elude the initial hijacking, but was forced to come to a halt several kilometres from the road.

A security guard was shot and wounded, while the other security guard was shot in his bullet-proof vest and was also wounded due to the impact of the high-calibre rounds.

The suspects fled the scene and a massive manhunt for the armed robbers is underway.

The road is currently closed as investigations take place.
