NEWCASTLE – To her shock, a mother recently discovered her 15-year-old son had not only been exposed to drugs at a local school, but also used it.
“My son phoned me from school to say he had smoked dagga and was caught,” said the mother, who wished to remain anonymous to protect her son’s identity.
He claimed peers offered him a joint and he decided to try it.
Allegedly, different kinds of drugs such as cocaine, meth and tik were freely available on the school premises.
“I now had to remove my son from the school, because the teacher he told, told the children who were dealing in the drugs, who had given their names to teachers. I don’t want my son to be hurt by them,” she said.
The teenager claimed he had seen more than one fellow learner with illicit substances at school.
Allegedly, the school principal was unaware of the drug problem in school.
“There are drugs in every school, but if any learner was caught with drugs, I would know about it; I am not aware of the allegations,” he said.
“A learner suspected of abusing drugs, will be sent for drug tests, and SANCA will be brought in and the learner will be put on a rehabilitation programme,” he concluded.
