#AntiRacism: When love is judged by an outsider
“While we were still dating, we went out for supper. A couple at another table literally stopped eating and stared at us. But I am like a duck. Pour water on my back and it will simply wash off.”
PARADISE – Dirty looks and snide remarks are merely two of the experiences interracial couples can be subjected to.
Mark and Seshne Jacobs married almost a year ago, after finding love in each others arms.
Yet, the couple are no strangers to sneering bigotry.
“We were holding hands in town the other day, and a woman said that if I were married to an Indian man, I probably wouldn’t be holding his hand,” said Seshne.
Mark said while he and Seshne generally usually ignored remarks, he found them humorous.
“While we were still dating, we went out for supper. A couple at another table literally stopped eating and stared at us. But I am like a duck. Pour water on my back and it will simply wash off.”
Although they did not experience stares and derogatory remarks from people in bigger cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town, they believed racism was alive and well in Newcastle.
“We are fortunate there is no racism in Paradise or Lennoxton though, as people have welcomed our relationship” said Seshne.
Mark advised people who wished to engage in an interracial relationship, not to be concerned about the thoughts of others.
“If you want to do it, go for it. We all bleed the same and in the times we live in now, if you fall for someone, you cannot let it go,” Mark concluded.
By shunning preconceived ideas of critics, Mark and Seshne are a couple of the future, finding hope in a multiracial tomorrow.
